South Georgia is one of the earth's last frontiers, and the last land before reaching Antarctica. It is home to a great variety of wildlife, including numerous bird species, as well as a large King Penguin colony. The terrain of South Georgia makes the island largely unexplored. The AMARUK ® South Georgia Expedition travels unchartered wilderness, breathtaking mountain peaks and glaciers, as well as one of the most rugged coast line on the planet.

Meeting is at Ushuaia Airport (USH) at 09:00am on day 1, and return is at Ushuaia Airport (USH) by 11:00pm on day 8.
Participants are asked to plan on arriving at least one day prior to the start of the expedition, and on leaving at least one day after the end of the expedition.

Day 1 • Transfer from Ushuaia Airport to the marina. Deparure to South Georgia Island via boat. Night in stateroom (double occupancy).
Day 2 • Travel by boat to South Georgia Island. Night in stateroom (double occupancy).
Day 3 • Arrival in South Georgia in early morning. Briefing. Departure of the expedition. Backcountry camping.
Day 4 • Trekking. Backcountry camping.
Day 5 • Trekking. Backcountry camping.
Day 6 • Trekking. Return to the boat. Night in stateroom.
Day 7 • Travel by boat back to Ushuaia. Night in stateroom (double occupancy).
Day 8 • Travel by boat back to Ushuaia. Arrival in early evening. Transfer to Ushuaia Airport.

The return distance travelled is approximately 40km (25 miles), with an elevation gain of about 3000 m (10,000 ft). The maximum reached altitude is about 2,000 m (6,600 ft). This expedition may involve extreme temperature variations, travel on scree and boulders, as well as very difficult terrain, challenging obstacle and river crossings, side hilling, and bushwhacking.

An excellent level of physical fitness is required for this expedition in order to sustain several hours a day of continuous strenuous physical activity, as well as frequent extreme and sudden elevation gains, while carrying a heavy backpack.
Previous backpacking experience is absolutely required.

Accommodations • Stateroom (Double Occupancy) on Day 1, 2, 6 and 7. Backcountry participating camping on remaining days. Transportation • Return boat transportation between Ushuaia Airport (USH) and trail head. Group Size • Maximum 6 participants. Wilderness Guide • PAWGI certified Wilderness Guide or Instructor. Meals • All meals while on the boat. Expedition food while in South Georgia (minimum of 1,500 Calories per day). Fees • All backcountry and camping permit fees. Equipment • Hygiene & personal care items, tent (shared), water filter, camp stove & fuel, cooking utensils, First Aid Kit, Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), GPS, and Satellite phone.

Airfare • To/from Ushuaia Airport. Personal Equipment • Packing equipment, sleeping equipment, clothing, footwear, hydration system. Extras • Accommodations and meals on the night prior to the start of the expedition, or following the end of the expedition. Budget • $300 for incidentals.
